Technology Transfer Price for High Power Turbines Noise Out of a Loudspeaker

The entrepreneur Udo Borgmann, from Wolfenbüttel has many innovative ideas. For one of these, he has received the technology transfer prize of the IHK (Chamber of Commerce and Industry) Braunschweig.

If researchers want to study the sound pressure level in the cabin of a passenger aircraft, they need the real sound of an aircraft engine. This normally requires investing in expensive flight times and fuel; it would therefore be easier and cheaper to simulate the sound of the engine.

It is this approach that Udo Borgmann, founder of Pan Acoustics GmbH, has put into action. Together with his team, he has developed a multichannel high power speaker system that can imitate and simulate the engine noise of a real aeroplane in flight.

For this invention, he was awarded the technology transfer award of the IHK Braunschweig last Friday. He is the first entrepreneur to receive the award in its 28-year history; all previous recipients have been scientists.

The process of transferring technology between science and industry "is a unique and very special operation", said patent attorney and a jury member Edgar Lin in his eulogy.

In this instance, Pan Acoustic has essentially acted as a research institution, providing its research and development expertise to the German Aerospace Center (DLR) in Braunschweig.

One of the strands of research conducted by DLR concerns increasing the comfort of air passengers by reducing turbine noise in the interior of the aircraft. The knowledge and technology gained by the DLR through their research with Pan Acoustic is made available via this program to the European aircraft manufacturer Airbus.

This "very unusual transfer of power" is testament to the fact that "small businesses in our region can reach a significant level of research", said Edgar Lin in the run-up to the awards. Mr Borgmann himself spoke of a "great honor" and highlighted the performance and the contribution of his team behind the development.
